Born into Midwifery?

I've once heard the saying "you are born into midwifery" and this certainly seems the case with me. Enjoy the first blog post being about my own birth!

Many moons ago (like a lot) my mother arrived at the hospital in labor with her 4th baby (me ). Unfortunately the doctor sent her home telling her she wasn't in labor. My dad drove them the 7ish miles home and she went to bed feeling frustrated that she didn't know by her 4th baby what was going on with her body. Suddenly when she lays down to bed, her water breaks and they rush back towards the hospital.

While driving that very short drive, my mother yells at my dad to "Pull over, the baby is coming!" While I'm sure he believed her, he was determined to get back to the hospital! He was also concerned about the interior of his new car. ;) And there I went...ker-plunk... I shot out and apparently hit the floorboard of their new wagoneer. This did indeed make my dad pull over long enough to make sure I was ok and crying, then they drove on. When the doc met them at the hospital my dad informed him he expected a deeply discounted delivery fee!

Growing up you could find me surrounded by animals, babies and traveling a lot. So in reality, not much has changed! Never one to shy away from challenges (note the determined girl learning to play the accordian that weighed as much as her), I stuck out midwifery school with 7 kiddos in tow and somehow still managed to collect half a dozen animals or more!

Hope you enjoy the little glimpse into what shaped this midwife into the old lady she is today.

What IS a Midwife anyway?

I don't know if there is as much confusion surrounding other professions as I hear about with Midwifery. Are we Doula's? OB's? Hippies...
